In today’s gospel, Jesus praises the widow who gave everything she had to support the temple in Jerusalem. Today, Remembrance Sunday, we remember the many people who, to protect and defend us, gave their lives on our behalf.
We remember all religious leaders. May they be effective peacemakers in our troubled world.
We remember all those members of the armed forces who have died in battle and left behind families whose grief would last a lifetime. May those who died have eternal rest and the living find comfort.
We remember the emergency services and the civilians who are trapped in wars that they did not begin. May they find the courage and strength to rebuild their lives and to create a future of hope.
We remember all those who are trapped in today’s wars. May they find healing for their pain. May peacemakers bring some end to the bloodshed and violence. May governments do what they can to establish peace and to provide for the men, women and children who have lost everything – including hope.
We remember the people of Spain who have experienced such suffering because of the recent floods. May they find the support that they need to rebuild their lives, families, homes and businesses.
We remember the United States as people learn their election results. May there be healing of the divisions and a real attempt to work together for the good of the country and of the world.
We remember ourselves. May we work towards a greater understanding of each other in our families, workplaces and our country.
